Story
The Dirty South is going to be a game engine of sorts, so the story and the graphics are all eventually modable for anyone who feels so compelled. But we will certainly be working with a story and some graphics that will one day be the "default" game if no others are specified. So here's the story I have in mind:
Setting
You live in the boonies, somewhere that is not highly populated and contains a significant amount of wildlife. The time setting is unclear, but might as well be present day for all the player knows. Guns will play a very small part in the game, if at all.
Story
You wake up one morning, just like any other morning, except somethings a little different. Your mother is not trying to merely wake you up, she's beating you. Frightened, but unwilling to hurt your mother, you try talking to her. She doesn't respond; instead she tries to eat you. In a quick decision between life or death, influenced by the fact that your mother is clearly posessed, you fight her, unarmed, to the death. (If you don't, you get gameover.)
After a close inspection, it becomes clear from the cold, pale skin and the bite marks on her neck that she has been introduced to a zombie virus of sorts. Hardened from killing your own mother, and understanding that you may find more of her kind, you decide to take some weapons with you. You find that your mother's skeletal frame is weakened from her sickness and without much effort pull either her arm or her leg off. (A dialog box at this point appears, depecting the thought process going through the character's mind, and giving the player the choice between options. The difference will dictate weapon speed and damage.) If the player rummages about his room, he'll also notice some CD's which he can take with him, useful as projectile weapons.
Upon leaving your house, you find that everyone in the area has succumbed to this awful sickness and your adventure begins. You will fight different variations of zombified humans, from cops with their beating sticks to little kids whose small bodies allow them to move at annoyingly quick speeds. You will also fight animals with the sickness, namely dogs and cats, who are swift and fierce.
From here you will uncover a clearly well-constructed story regarding this sickness that consumed your mother and constantly threatens you, and the mastermind(s) behind it - who knows, maybe Satan, or Osama Bin Laden, maybe even Perry Logan. I dare not expose the ending, as any good storywriter knows better.
The Abstract Side
Since this is intended to be a Zelda remake, and will likewise follow certain trends found in that awesome game, I'd like to note that there will be the classics like hearts, heart containers, rupees, and probably even a master sword at some point. While it doesn't exactly fit with the story, it wouldn't really be a "Zelda remake" without these fundamental elements. So expect hidden caves that you must use bombs to find, and blue rupees worth 5 and red ones worth 20, and bows and arrows, heart pieces that are collected to make whole hearts, ladders, cliffs, treasure chests, boss keys, doors-that-lock-behind-you, and who knows, maybe even a dark world.
